WhatsApp payments service has finally launched in India after receiving the green signal from the National payment corporation of India (NPCI). WhatsApp Pay is being rolled out in India in a graded manner, Whatsapp has more than 40 crore users in India however WhatsApp pay services will reportedly be rolled out to 2 crore users only. This is because the NPCI has stated that a 30% cap will be implemented on total payment volumes via every third party payments app from 1 January next year.
Whatsapp pay has been launched in partnership with the National Payments Corporation of India( NPCI), and it is based on the Unified Payments Interface or UPI, the same system on which other popular payments service likes Google Pay, Phone Pay, BHIM, and Paytm works.
Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook said that ‘payments service’ is now available in 10 Indian regional language versions of WhatsApp. It has partnered with five Indian banks — ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, Axis Bank, the State Bank of India, and Jio Payments Bank –for the service. People can send or receive money on WhatsApp to anyone using a UPI supported app,” WhatsApp said in a blog post.
WhatsApp has also said that it is necessary to have a bank account and debit card to send or receive money in India, The money will be transferred to your bank account directly and the messaging app will help you transfer the amount to other people and vice versa. A user will also have to enter a personal UPI PIN for each transaction while using WhatsApp for payments.
WhatsApp Payments: How to setup WhatsApp pay
For starting the WhatsApp Payments services first your WhatsApp number should be the same that’s linked to your Bank Accounts.
Here are the steps to how to activate the WhatsApp Payments service.
- To get started you need to be on the latest version of WhatsApp for Android or iOS.
- Open WhatsApp > go to Settings > tap Payments.
- Tap Add payment method. Next, choose your bank.
- After you’ve selected your bank, you’ll need to verify your phone number. Tap Verify via SMS.
- Wait for the verification process to finish. Once done, your bank details will be added below Payment methods.
WhatsApp Pay: How to make payments
- WhatsApp Payments lets you send money to WhatsApp contacts as well as people who are not Open a WhatsApp chat and tap the attachment icon.
- Tap Payment > type the desired amount > hit enter.
- Enter your UPI pin to complete the payment.
For UPI apps such as PhonePe or Google Pay.
- Open WhatsApp > go to Settings > tap Payments.
- Tap New Payment > tap Send to a UPI ID > enter the UPI ID > hit Verify.
- After the UPI ID is verified, type the desired amount and hit enter.
- Enter your UPI pin to complete the payment.
You can also send a request to your WhatsApp contacts who have not yet registered with Whatsapp. To do that, follow these steps.
- Open a WhatsApp chat > tap the attachment icon > tap Payment.
- On the next screen, tap Notify to let the other person know about WhatsApp Payments feature.
